This year marks the eleventh year that WBZ-TV has carried the program.
The BOSTON POPS FIREWORKS SPECTACULAR, celebrating its 40th year, is an annual free outdoor Fourth of July concert at the DCR Hatch Shell on the Esplanade and is sponsored by Liberty Mutual Insurance, one of America's leading insurers, offering auto, home and life insurance for individuals and families, as well as a variety of insurance products and services for businesses. This year’s Spectacular keeps alive several of the Boston holiday traditions including the Pops’ now classic Independence Day rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” which features real cannons, the live ringing of church bells and fireworks. The concert will conclude with “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” which includes the ceremonial American flag drop and confetti shot. The Spectacular will be capped off by a magnificent fireworks array that fills the skies above Boston with a stunning exhibition of color and breathtaking pageantry. Also for the first time in the show’s 40-year history, pyrotechnics will be fired off of the Mass Ave. Bridge as a key element to the main fireworks display.
The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular fireworks show will be produced by New England-based, Atlas Pyrovision Productions. Featuring effects, adaptations and meaningful music themes that celebrate our country, our families and the unique American tradition of July 4th fun. They will also be producing the Special Effects Pyrotechnics off the Hatch Shell. These pyrotechnic devices are specifically designed in the United States for this event using “indoor” pyrotechnics.
The cannons will be fired off by the 101st Field Artillery Regiment. The regiment currently consists of 350 men and women from the 1st Battalion 101st Field Artillery based in Brockton, MA. Their Unit Alpha Battery 101st Field Artillery Second Corps Cadets are based in Danvers, MA and Fall River, MA.
The Boston Pops, in its 128th year, has a rich and storied history that began with its founding in 1885. The Boston Pops Orchestra has distinguished itself as the founder of and leader in its genre, presenting the best of a wide variety of music from jazz to pop, indie rock to big band, film music to the great American songbook, and Broadway to classical. Though Arthur Fiedler's nearly 50-year tenure as Pops conductor (1930-1979) established the Boston Pops as a national icon, Conductor Laureate John Williams (1980-1993) and present-day conductor Keith Lockhart (1995-present) have shepherded the orchestra through three decades of tumultuous change in the world of music. The Boston Pops, "America's Orchestra," performs for an audience of nearly 900,000 people annually in Boston, across the country and around the world, and reaches millions more through its recordings and television broadcasts. For more information, visit www.bostonpops.org.
Having led more than 1,500 Boston Pops concerts, Keith Lockhart became the twentieth conductor of the Boston Pops in 1995, adding his artistic vision to the Pops tradition established by his predecessors John Williams and Arthur Fiedler. Audiences worldwide love Keith Lockhart’s inimitable style, expressed not only through his consummate music-making, but also by his unique ability to speak directly to the audience about the music to which he feels so passionately committed. He and the Boston Pops have released four self-produced recordings—Sleigh Ride, America, Oscar & Tony, and The Red Sox Album—and also recorded eight albums with RCA Victor—Runnin’ Wild: The Boston Pops Play Glenn Miller, American Visions, the Grammy-nominated The Celtic Album, Holiday Pops, A Splash of Pops, Encore!, the Latin Grammy-nominated The Latin Album, and My Favorite Things: A Richard Rodgers Celebration. Lockhart also currently serves as principal conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in London, with whom he recently performed in Queen Elizabeth’s gala Diamond Jubilee Concert, which was broadcast around the world.
The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular will be aired locally on CBS Boston’s WBZ-TV from 7 PM-10 PM hosted by WBZ News Anchors Jonathan Elias & Lisa Hughes featuring Anchor Jack Williams, Anchor Paula Ebben, Meteorologist Todd Gutner and Sports Director Steve Burton. The show also airs locally on WBZ Newsradio 1030. WBZ AM’s broadcast begins at 6 PM and will be hosted by Jordan Rich and morning Anchor Joe Mathieu.
